It seems many places are getting crazy weather lately. However, most of them are just flukes. Barrie's strategic location gets cold, snowy winters and hot humid summers. Spring is virtually non-existent. From about October to May, it's cold and, for the most part, trees, plants, grass, crops, etc, don't grow much. That's about half the year. For two of three of those months, it's bitterly cold. Don't forget, Barrie is in a snow belt.
An hour down the road in Toronto, it can be a few degrees warmer and free of snow most of the winter. Then we get a brief transition from winter to summer. Soon it's hot and humid with dangerous insects that prefer this area. Out of the whole year, there's maybe a month or two that I personally find neither too hot and humid nor too cold and snowy.
Usually by April, the spring thaw is underway, snow disappears and the grass starts to grow. But, this is Barrie. In Barrie, April snow falls (not showers) bring May flowers. A couple of times this month, we've had a nice, light blanket of snow, while in Toronto, not a flake to be found!
Who would have thought of winter injuries happening in April. My father managed to have a nasty fall due to the snow in April. Had it not been for the snow, he probably wouldn't be in pain and using a cane or crutches. Last winter, he took a nasty fall and fractured his hip. Due to the prolonged winter in Barrie, be prepared for more winter injuries, accidents, money spent on winter tires, winter clothes, boots, snowblowers, etc.
PS: As I write this, the East Coast, and even Eastern Ontario are suffering a winter storm to various levels of severity. I feel your pain. We get that sort of thing on a regular basis here in Barrie and Central Ontario.

You are one sorry piece of work!
Your probably a great fit in Montreal where you can spend your days complaining and voting to separate from the rest of this beautiful country.
I also suggest that you pull your lower lip over your entire head and swallow!
you're right. the citiodts that move here from toronto for the cheap houses are making a big mistake. You can throw Orillia as a terrible city to live in too. No sun in the winter it snows almost every day.
This is a late comment to your post.
I am older student living in Barrie part-time during the school months. Barrie has an uncanny ability to suck the happyness right out of me as soon as I drive onto the god awful Bayfield Rd. strip mall.
I hate the place, it's dreary, horrifically planned, a nightmare to drive in, a mess of concrete, no character, overpriced bars and lounges, sad zombie people, i can't say enough bad things about it.
I cannot wait to be out of Barrie for good.
You guys have got to be kidding me! Ya Barrie really sucks, on a beautiful bay, gross. Close to city and cottages, yuk! Great schools with low crime, puke! Why don't you go back to toronot and live in your 400 square foot crap hole. Oh and for the same price as a Nice 2000 spaure foot home with a yard. Please leave!
Is it okay to hate Barrie if we don't come from Toronto?
Barrie should be taught how not to develop a city to civil engineering students.
Yes, Barrie does suck. I lived there for 3 years while attending college and working weekends. Terrible place to live. The people are so rude and ignorant. Barrie is one little forsaken hell hole. Good place to be if you want to be scrutinized like a criminal. The place is full of hippies, and the elderly are at war with the cities youth.
As we can see, not everyone likes Barrie. I know I am not alone. Some people love it, some people don't. Barrie is obviously not for everyone. What some people find desirable about Barrie, others dislike and vice-versa.
There are lots of other nice places to live. Barrie is not the answer for everyone! It seems all the Pro-Barrie people believe that everyone thinks (or should think) as they do. For example, if you like winter sports, and don't mind the snow-belt climate, you'll have a hard time convincing a tropical beach lover that hates cold and snow that Barrie is a nice place.
For the record, I never complained about Montreal, other than the fact it gets cold and snowy in the winter (though no lake-effect snow squalls). It's a great city, it's got culture, class and a rich history. That appeals to me. It may not appeal to everyone. I'd rather live there any day over Barrie.
I been around the Philippines with my wife who is orginally from that country. I can tell you I enjoy the Philippines much better, lots of culture there, plus the weather is warm year around, and the people are friendly and hospitable. Also the food is healthier there also.
The McDonald's that opened up on Dunlop street in Barrie a few years ago. Around the same time it opened up, I ordered a sandwich. That was my first time ordering there. When I got home, I found that the meat was bad. My first time going to that restaurant and I get bad food.
I used to stop at Tim Horton's for a coffee before going to work in Barrie. One lady was a total bitch. All I ever did was order something, and I get bad mouthed by a clerk. I merely ordered something and I get disrespected. Seems that is the attitude in Barrie.
In the Philippines, I went to many fast food and fine restaurants. Seems the people were very hospitable, and I did not get disrespected. Plus all the food was good. They call me "Sir", a title that I do not get when I am in Barrie.
Seems the women in Barrie are bitches and don't know how to treat a customer. Even the women whom I dated in Barrie were total weirdo's and do not know how to treat or get along with a man. They do not respect a man for who they are. To the women in Barrie, it seems a man is just someone whom you can ridicule and disrespect. I was probably the finest and nicest man in the world, but then again, when you live in Barrie no one cares.
I am happily married with my filipina wife. I couldn't be any happier. She respects me, and understands me. She is very enthusiastic about our relationship. Filipino's make wonderful wifes. And guess what, WE DON'T LIVE IN BARRIE!.
I finally understand why Barrie has one of the largest "Crack" populations per capita in Canada. The police are Crack Heads themselves!!! The Barrie police protect the criminals and persicute the victims. I guess this is because they do not want to loose their own source for Crack.
Here is a situatiojn I was just put through. Someone, went to the police and reported that I hit their car, when no such incident happened. The police sided with them on their word only, called me into the station and gave me a ticket for Fail to Remain. I said that no such incident happened and asked them to look at my vehicle for any sign of corresponding damage. My car was freshly painted about 6 months ago, so it is immaculate and shows absolutely not one mark anywhere. I could not believe the response I got. She refused to even step outside and investigate the claim saying that it is up to the courts now.
My lawyer gave me a deal, thank you; however, I still do not understand why I have to pay a lawyer to cover my ass because some fuck-head cop refused to do her JOB.
So if you have a beef with someone go to the Barrie Cops and file a complaint against them, they will take a one-sided view... Oh, yeah, you better not be a normal, law abiding citizen, or it will back fire; they only help the criminals.
Wow, I haven't checked this blog for a while and I see so many more comments from people who also don't like Barrie! I knew I wasn't alone!
To all you people who didn't like Barrie and finally left, congratulations! I know what you were feeling. To those who are still in Barrie but not enjoying it, I hope you are able to move on to a nicer city as soon as possible!
I don't like to dwell on the negative, so instead I will put behind all of the bad memories of memories and enjoy the present (which is NOT in Barrie)!
